Nearly 200 coronavirus patients have died at Stoke-on-Trent’s crisis-hit hospital  in the last four weeks.

Latest figures show there have been 593 deaths at the trust running the Royal Stoke University Hospital and Stafford’s County Hospital with seven recorded in the last 24 hours.

This means there have now been 195 deaths linked to Covid-19 at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust since the start of the month with the majority of those at Royal Stoke.

The news comes as a ‘major incident’ has been declared at the critical care unit with the alert level being increased from three to four yesterday.

Seriously-ill covid patients are now being transferred to hospitals across the West Midlands to help ease pressure on frontline staff.

Royal Stoke chief executive Tracy Bullock said: « The decision to transfer patients out of our hospital is not something we take lightly and we would like to apologise to our patients and families who are affected by this. Given the reduction in the community infection rate of Covid-19 across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent we are hoping this position will be resolved quickly. »
