More than 440 new coronavirus infections have been detected across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland in the past 24 hours – taking the running total to 35,241 recorded cases.

Health officials released the latest area by area figures this afternoon.

The total rose by 443 in the most recent 24-hour reporting period.

Area by area statistics reveal the differing experiences of people living across the city and county.

A total of 163 people in Leicester tested positive for the virus, meaning more than 16,300 people have contracted it since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile, Charnwood, a borough which includes Loughborough and its university, recorded 49 new cases, taking its running total beyond 6,000.

At the other end of the scale, the county of Rutland’s running total increased by 5 cases, meaning it has seen 441 people develop the illness.

The local government areas of Blaby district, Oadby and Wigston borough and Hinckley and Bosworth collectively saw a further 123 confirmed infections.

The Harborough area and North West Leicestershire, including the towns of Ashby and Coalville, recorded 47 and 56 respectively.

At the end of last week, people in Leicester and Leicestershire were told they have just days to save Christmas from a tight lockdown.

The Government is starting to think about what measures it will impose to try to stem the spread of coronavirus when the national lockdown ends on December 2.

So far 16 days of national restrictions have failed to make a dent in rising infections in Leicester and Leicestershire with rates here far in excess of what they were when the Government imposed the measures at the start of the month.

Leicestershire is ‘under the hammer of the second wave’ of the virus and Christmas lockdown beckons unless rates began to fall in the final days of the national measures.

The local cumulative (since the start of the pandemic) figures for Sunday, November 22 are:

Leicester: 16,349 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 4,615.4

Blaby: 2,846 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 2,803.2

Harborough: 1,848 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,970

Hinckley and Bosworth: 2,360 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 2,086

Melton: 1,034 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 2,019.2
